Art in Bloom at The Gallery at Flat Rock

Posted on: April 13th, 2018 by Lauryn Higgins No Comments

Sometimes the universe takes care of you in unexpected ways.  Last year I participated in an Art in Bloom event at The Gallery at Flat Rock. The piece I choose for floral interpretation was a very compelling black and white photo, “Blown Away”.  When doing this type of project the fun part, (for me at least!) is coming up with a design that represents the art, yet is not literal. I also like to provoke discussion.  Art is subjective, so some viewers often form opinions of floral designs, (I like this/don’t like this) based on personal taste, as opposed to design principles. I like to shake it up and challenge the viewer, which is why the design is very contemporary, with minimal, yet specific use of flowers.

Because I had to work, the piece was installed in the gallery with the photograph, and I left, unable to attend the preview party.  I was told that Sharon Lee, the photographer was extremely ill, and possibly unable to attend the show as well.  This was sad news as I really wanted to meet her.  The next morning Suzanne gave me a call with the news that during the party, someone inadvertently bumped into my design, and it smashed on the floor.  (My heart went out to Suzanne, as that must have been a difficult call to make!) At that juncture, I made the  the decision that sometimes art is indeed transient, and stuff just happens….all will be well!

I received an email from Suzanne recently, letting me know that WNC Magazine is featuring Art in Bloom at The Gallery At Flat Rock as the top thing to do this coming Memorial Weekend, and that Melissa Reardon from the magazine chose the photo of my piece for the article!! Wow. She also shared the sad news that Sharon Lee,  the photographer has passed away.  I am so deeply moved to think that my design and that amazing photograph will be featured in such a special way! I hope Sharon is looking down and is as honored as I am!

Joanna & Nick, Crest Center and Pavilion Wedding

Joanna and Nick really know how to have fun.
Some of my favorite things about their wedding…

1. I could feel their connection as I shot.
2. Joanna wasn’t afraid to take some risks with her headpiece/headband and it worked for her, big time. It always makes me happy when I feel like a bride can truly be herself on her wedding day.
3. They had “hangover kits” for their guests. Thoughtful.
4. The personalized details of this event were impressive.
5. They trusted the vision I had for their wedding photographs.

Whenever a boho inspiration shoot comes my way, I completely change plans for my own wedding. I thought I wanted a Jane Austen garden style soiree, but maybe, just maybe, I need to boho it up a bit.  I’m thinking gorgeous farm tables, perfectly imperfect florals and “edgy” stylings that basically need no description.  In other words?  I need this wedding.  See every last ounce of inspiration captured by Michelle Lyerly right here.

From Michelle Lyerly… We wanted to have a romantic, yet edgy balance. The colors were cream, greens, lavender and blush with brown medicine bottles and touches of gold. We incorporated geodes and a guitar to give the shoot that authentic bohemian vibe. There was a beautiful horse on the property that the model immediately took to and we got some beautiful shots of them right before the shoot ended. Hair and makeup was kept soft and easy with floral crowns and wisps tied in. The main model wore Sarah Seven Amour gown with cap sleeves. The blonde is wearing a Sarah Seven Gwen gown. The blush is a combination of a Watters Ahsan skirt and Carina corset. The invitation suite has leather hand lined envelopes.

Kristy and Tim and a Lavender Surprise

Posted on: October 2nd, 2013 by Beth No Comments

Here’s a little romantic story about Kristy and Tim’s recent wedding at Bear Lake. Kristy loves lavender and Tim has said that no matter where he is, when he smells the scent of lavender he immediately thinks of her. So Kristy decided to surprise Tim, and have fresh Lavender featured in the arbor and decor at the ceremony, with the request that the fragrance of lavender perfume the air. All of this was kept secret, as a surprise for Tim until he arrived at the ceremony site on their wedding day.

Kristy and Tim also love coffee, so fresh coffee beans were featured in the centerpieces.  The cocktail table arrangements were created in small French Press pots, with fresh beans scattered on the table.
